Art Van returns to the Detroit Design Festival (DDF) for their second-annual sofa design battle at Eastern Market After Dark on Thursday, Sept. 22 by inviting four artists to live-paint on modern sofas. The sofas are being auctioned on eBay. Bid closes Sunday 10/23 at 4pm. 100% of the proceeds will benefit Arts & Scraps

Ellen Rutt


Ellen Rutt is a Detroit-based multi-disciplinary artist and designer. Ellen’s work can be viewed along the Dequindre Cut and part of Murals in the Market. She has also worked with Red Bull House of Art and created a mural for a resident of Detroit’s historic Lafayette Park.


Lindy Shewbridge


Lindy Shewbridge creates colorful shapes of organic nature across canvases or panels. She often signs her signature and sometimes a message in the underpainting of her work. Lindy has work shown at Detroit’s Red Bull House of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD).


Phil Simpson


Phillip Simpson is an artist, designer, and founder of Detroit’s Baltimore Gallery. Phil prides himself on creating an environment for artists to succeed and practice their craft. In addition, Phil started The Smile Brand, a Lifestyle brand dedicated to the life of smiling and spreading joy. The brand offers an optimistic message featuring apparel and accessories that are designed and manufactured locally. This approach guarantees that monies being earned are spent locally, helping the Detroit economy. Their products are produced in limited quantities to the highest standard by working closely with manufacturers and printers.


Desiree Kelly


Born and raised in Detroit, Desiree was introduced to Oil Painting while studying Graphic Design and Drawing at Wayne State University. She has been represented by several galleries in the Detroit area which includes, Red Bull House of Art (Detroit), Inner State Gallery, Ann Arbor Art Center, Scarab Club, Crooked Tree & Contemporary Art Institute of Detroit. Her work has been featured at Charles H Wright Museum of African American Art and was selected as a sponsored resident for the 5th cycle of Red Bull House of Art in 2013. Desiree has also had her paintings featured in an International group exhibition “The Story of the Creative” at See.Me gallery in NYC.
