Working Title, an exhibition installed in a former retail space at the Compuware Building (a 1 million sq. foot office building in downtown Detroit), seeks to interpret, examine, and respond to our design history and to the state of work at this moment. It features mostly local artists and designers; Brian Dubois, Sarah Kabot, Seth Keller, Scott Klinker, Ryan Piper, and Jackie Rines; as well as works from the Compuware Art Collection and an installation from Haworth, a Michigan-based design firm and furniture manufacturer. The exhibition will include historical elements, custom design, and fine art.

Our working environment has changed dramatically as we have shifted from a manufacturing economy to a more service-based economy in the last century. Michigan has been at the forefront of developing the look and feel of our work environment through furniture design and office systems companies like Haworth and Steelcase, as well as influential designers who started their practice locally like Florence Knoll, Eero Saarinen, and Ray + Charles Eames.

In this exhibition, we seek to investigate the state of work and our working environments with a sense of curiosity, good design, innovation, and humor. How does the office function today as more individuals are working from home and from shared-spaces? How has design responded to the fields of ergonomics, social-psychology, and organizational behavior within the office environment? How have office spaces in the city of Detroit adapted to new ways of working, while maintaining their historical architecture?
Featuring mostly local artists, designers, and artifacts, we want to open up the conversation to a wide array of people in the Metro Detroit area. A number of works in the show will be interactive and hands-on.
