Detroit City of Design and the Future of Work

In March 2017, Detroit was invited as Guest City of Honor by fellow UNESCO City of Design Saint-Etienne, France to present a series of exhibitions exploring the future of work at the 10th International Design Biennale in Saint-Etienne to an audience of more than 230,000. A multidisciplinary ensemble of Detroiters convened to produce a survey of the city’s interconnected movements and explored imagined futures as the definition of work itself changes in Detroit. The Future of Work: Detroit City of Design, now presented in Detroit, is the second iteration of the exhibition and features objects and experiences from the original exhibition alongside photos, video, and stories from the 70 Detroiters who traveled to Saint-Etienne.
