Youth Day

Join Detroit’s next generation of design stars the Michigan Science Center for an afternoon of design education and exploration at the Michigan Science Center. Presented by Ford Motor Company Fund.

Workshops and activities include:

  • Collaborative City: A hands-on activity that exposes youth to the process of architecture and urban design. Presented by ROSSETTI.
  • Junior Textile Designers: Designing and printing geometric textile patterns, inspired by Alexander Girard’s designs. Presented by Cranbrook Art Museum.
  • Cyanotype: Printmaking With the Sun Learn how to utilize elements of nature in this fun and quick printing and photography process. Presented by JenClare Gawaran and Clare Fox.
  • Henry Ford Learning Institute’s Innovation Station: Test your imagination and problem solving skills with creative mobility-themed challenges. Presented by Henry Ford Learning Institute.
  • Driving Great Art: Auto Design Sketch and design your own concept cars and race cars. Presented by Art Road Non Profit.
  • Community Park Design: An interactive, community project where youth get a chance to learn about urban planning and the the design process. Presented by Lawrence Technological University.
  • Hats Off to Creative Youth: Design and make your own paper hats. Presented by Mint Artists Guild.
  • Artist Trading Card Making: Dive into the history of Artist Trading Cards and design your own in this interactive workshop. Presented by Art Smart Education Services.
  • Kite Making: Build your own kite while learning about kite flying cultures around the world, renewable energy, physics, and design. Presented by Detroit Kite Festival.
  • Sustainability Design: Dare Challenge An all ages challenge focused on innovation in everyday product design solutions. Presented by Metro Museum of Design Detroit.
  • Kinetic Visual Storytelling: An improvisational animation workshop. Presented by Single Frame Films.
  • Art Meets Academics: Experience the relationship various art forms have with core curriculum academics, such as math, reading, science, language arts, and more. Presented by Artist Heaven
  • Coloring Station: Color your favorite ILL Emoji or natural hair girl. Presented by Naturally ILLustrated.

Be sure to join us for a special iMax screening of Dream Big, a film that will inspire kids to become the innovators who will improve the lives of people across our entire planet. Tickets will be available for purchase through the Detroit Science Center for $6.00. Mention “Detroit Design Festival” when purchasing your ticket and get $1.00 off.
